Tools for Accountants and Business Advisors

Accounting and advisory work is all about having smooth and efficient internal systems to free up your time to focus on your clients’ needs. I have been using my current accounting tech stack of tools for many years now and I’m often asked about their benefits. When assessing any resource, a great question to ask is, “What problems does this tool solve?” This line of thought can be applied both to the tools in your own firm, as well as to your clients’ resources.

Xero

I’ve been using Xero since 2009, and it’s truly a game changer. Designed for business owners, it offers a single ledger that eliminates the hassles of dealing with different software versions and data files.

Karbon

Managing emails and job statuses was a nightmare until we started using Karbon. It saves us many hours per team member each week and provides clarity around the status of every work item and email. Now, even when a team member is unavailable or not working, we can efficiently handle client inquiries and updates. I can’t imagine ever running our accounting business without Karbon.

Ignition

Clear and signed engagement letters that accurately capture the scope of works for clients, combined with automatic invoicing and payment collection, are critical for my practice. Ignition eliminates the need to chase late payers and avoids any confusion about what work is in or out of scope.

Business Fitness – HowNow Suite

We tried other document management systems before using HowNow, but they didn’t fully deliver. With HowNow, we also use smart workpapers, the knowledge base, and the client portal, making obtaining client signatures and the delivery of important information to and from clients safe, secure, and simple.

AccountKit is the Swiss Army Knife for Accountants, providing all the essential tools you need for your practice in one space. No more ugly spreadsheet hiding on one persons desktop. The asset finance schedules are my favorite tool. They had me at hello!

I use Once Hub to set up meetings, allowing my clients and associates to immediately see my available times and book face-to-face, phone, or video appointments. It also sends out automatic reminders, reducing no-shows and ensuring everyone stays on track.

Microsoft 365 and Teams

Microsoft 365 and Teams are staples in my office for sharing project work across the team. I use Teams to house non-client documents, marketing images, and how-to videos, as well as for video meetings. With so many apps included, why pay extra for more software when your Microsoft 365 subscription contains everything you need?
